The MEC responsible for the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA), Mr. Bentley Vass, on Thursday 29 August 2024, led a delegation of the Departments' Management Team to the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature (NCPL) to present the Department’s 2024/2025 Annual Performance Plans (APP) and Budget to the Portfolio Committee on COGHSTA. The APP identifies the performance indicators and targets that the Department will seek to achieve in the financial year. It is important that these performance indicators and targets are aligned across the Department's annual plans, budgets, in-year and annual reports. The presentation was welcomed by the Portfolio Committee (PC). A need to step up support to struggling municipalities, as well as strengthening the Provincial and District Disaster Management Centres, was highlighted by the members of the PC. This the PC said was an important area of work that the Department must focus on to ensure better service delivery outcomes and to mitigate against the issues of climate change. The Department was encouraged to ensure that the current 1 Billion Rand Presidential Housing Project to build houses across the Province continues without unnecessary delays, for the benefit of people who have been waiting for houses from the government, as well as to ensure local beneficiation. The PC requested more information on how the Traditional Leadership institution in the Province was supported by COGHSTA, with a view to ensuring that the traditional councils are able to play a meaningful role in the development of their traditional communities. The MEC supported by HOD Bafedile Lenkoe, and Executive Managers, provided the responses to the various issues and questions raised by the PC, and a commitment was made by the MEC that the PC will be engaged from time to time, to provide necessary feedback on matters that needs the attention of the PC.
