This is an important consultative intergovernmental forum that brings the provincial government and all our municipalities’ closer together to address pressing issues affecting our communities.
The Premier, Dr. Zamani Saul, ON 29 October 2024 chaired the first extended Premiers Intergovernmental Forum (PIGF) for the 7th Administration at the Office of the Premier in Kimberley in the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality.
The convening of this extended PIGF highlights Governments commitment to foster collaborative governance, encouraging joint decision making and moving away from the silo approaches, which have been bedevilling the work of Government. In his address, Premier Saul highlighted the need for the leadership of municipalities to work towards the attainment of clean audits for the benefit of the people of the Northern Cape. Premier Saul emphasised the need for social compacts to improve the living conditions of the people of this Province.
The PIGF received a report from COGHSTA which focused on critical areas such as enhancing service delivery and addressing community needs, promoting financial management and accountability within municipalities, improving infrastructure development and maintenance, and strengthening governance and leadership in local government. The PIGF further received an update on the roll-out and actual implementation of the District Development Model, which is a model to develop One Plan, One Budget, One District! This plan seeks to do away with the silos approach in our municipalities.
A key resolution from the PIGF was the convening of a Provincial Local Government Summit which will address some of these issues.
