MEC BENTLEY VASS HOSTED THE FIRST MUNIMEC MEETING OF THE SEVENTH ADMINISTRATION IN UPINGTON (ZF MGCAWU DISTRICT) from Thursday 10 October to Friday 11 October 2024.
The MUNIMEC is a strategic meeting of the MEC with Executive Mayors/Mayors, Whips of Councils, Municipal Managers, and CFOs to discuss and resolve a wide range of issues affecting the local government sphere.
A total of 27 out of the 31 Municipalities in the Northern Cape, attended the MuniMEC, and presentations were received including the Standard Transfer Specification (STS) prepayment meters rollover campaign, the Delimitation of Municipal Wards for 2026 Local Government Elections; Municipal Performance Turnaround Plan (MPTP), and service delivery imperatives, among the more important matters on the two-day agenda of the meeting.
Presentations were made by SALGA (South African Local Government Association), Department of Water and Sanitation; Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison; Provincial Treasury; and other key stakeholders in the local government eco-system and were followed by robust and constructive debates and engagements.
MEC Vass at the end of the two-day meeting said ‘’We had a wide range of discussions to craft a common understanding of our collective mandate to serve our communities better. This MUNIMEC comes on the back of the recent visit of the Deputy Minister of COGTA, Dr Namane Masemola, to two priority districts in the province where we discussed a wide range of collaborative efforts of all the three spheres of government in the spirit of the DDM’’.
Follow-up on key resolutions of the MuniMEC will be done to ensure the implementation of the decisions made during the meeting. The next MuniMEC is expected to take place in early December 2024.
