MEC Bentley Vass of COGHSTA welcomed the Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Tandi Mahambehlala, to the Northern Cape on her oversight visit to the Province from 22 to 23 May 2025. This visit was conducted as part of the province's oversight responsibilities, in accordance with the delegations received from the Minister of Human Settlements.
On Wednesday, 22 May 2025, Deputy Minister Mahambehlala, together with MEC Vass, led the oversight programme. They were joined by a dedicated team of mayors, ward councillors, and local leaders from the Namakwa District, working collaboratively to accelerate the delivery of human settlements and confront service delivery challenges on the ground. The engagements allowed for meaningful dialogue between the national, provincial, and local spheres of government. It was a chance to review progress, identify gaps, and reaffirm shared responsibilities to serve communities with integrity, urgency, and compassion.
On Thursday, 23 May, Deputy Minister Mahambehlala and MEC Vass led the handover of completed houses to elderly and vulnerable beneficiaries in Soebatsfontein. These houses represent far more than shelter—they are a restoration of dignity, a reflection of care, and a fulfilment of the government’s promise to the people. MEC Vass said that as the houses are completed, they will be handed over to beneficiaries in batches from project to project to avoid vandalism and ensure that the government's vision of ensuring security and comfort for citizens is achieved.
MEC Vass said ‘’Although this project in Soebatsfontein is through the HSDG, we are happy that work is also progressing in other parts of the Kamiesberg Local Municipality to yield a total of 105 houses through the 1 Billion Rand Housing Project, launched by President Ramaphosa in January 2024."
At the end of the oversight visit, DM Mahambehlala said, ‘’Our work is far from over, but this week in Namakwa reminded us, the dream of a home for every South African is not just a vision. It is happening—brick by brick, house by house, life by life.’’
The Northern Cape Provincial Government is committed to eradicating the province's huge housing backlog by building houses in all five (5) Districts of the Province.
