On Friday, 06 June 2025, the Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Tandi Mahambehlala, with the MEC of COGHSTA, in the Northern Cape, Bentley Vass, visited the Hull Street Social Housing Project, in De Beers, Kimberley (Frances Baard District), to be apprised on the progress of this project.
The Hull Street Project, which resumed operations in January 2025 after the appointment of a new construction company, will yield an additional 372 housing units that are currently under construction. To date, the project has housed a total of 127 beneficiaries, comprising 114 rental units in the Hull Street Project and an additional 13 rental units completed at the Moshoeshoe Eco-Village.
The Hull Street Social Housing Project has directly created employment for over 200 local labourers and engaged 15 subcontractors. This commitment to job creation extends to empowering women within the industry and providing invaluable practical experience to students fresh from their academic studies, nurturing the next generation of construction professionals.
Deputy Minister Mahambehlala expressed that she is happy with the ‘’substantial progress on site. We understand that the contractors have highlighted some challenges, and we have committed to working with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the completion of this project, which will benefit an additional 372 beneficiaries.
During the walk-about on the project site, the Project Manager, Ms Naume Moukangwe who is the Project Manager at Hull Street Housing Project said "As a company rooted in black excellence, we are incredibly proud of the work being done on this Project, it is not just about building structures; it's about building communities, creating opportunities, and showcasing the immense talent and dedication within our local workforce. We are committed to delivering a project of the highest quality, on time, and with a lasting positive impact on the lives of those it will serve."
MEC Vass said ‘’Our commitment to the people of this province is to ensure decent quality houses that will provide security and comfort, and we continue to do everything in our power to realise this commitment through various projects we are implementing, including this Hull Street Project, which was stalled last year. We have since appointed a new contractor, who resumed work in January this year. We are of the firm view that by the end of this financial year, we will hand over the keys to these houses to the beneficiaries of this project.
