MEC VASS CONCLUDES A SUCCESSFUL TWO-DAY VISIT TO THE NAMAKWA AND PIXLEY KA SEME DISTRICTS, WHERE HE HANDED OVER HOUSES IN THREE LOCAL MUNICIPALITIES.

MEC Bentley Vass, responsible for the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA) in the Northern Cape, concluded a successful two-day visit to the Namakwa and Pixley Ka Seme Districts from 08th to 09th of July 2025, where he handed over houses in three local municipalities.

The visit kicked off on Tuesday, the 8th July, where houses were handed over in Calvinia in the Hantam Local Municipality of the Namakwa District.

 The MEC was accompanied by the Executive Mayor of the District, Councillor Mervin Cloete, the Mayor of the local municipality, Councillor Koos Alexander, councillors and other local leaders.

On Wednesday, the 9th July, MEC Vass concluded his two districts, two-day visit, with the handing over of houses in De Aar, in the Emthanjeni Local Municipality, and in Colesberg, in the Umsobomvu Local Municipality, both situated in the Pixley Ka Seme District. 

The MEC was accompanied by the Mayor of the Emthanjeni Municipality, Councillor Lulamile Nkumbi, in De Aar, and the Mayor of the Umsobomvu Municipality, Councillor Mzwandile Toto, Council Speaker, Councillor Nandipha Stafa, and councillors.

MEC Vass handed over a total of twenty-seven (27) houses to happy beneficiaries as part of the government's broader objective to house the nation and ensure shelter and dignity for all.

In his address, MEC Vass said ‘’We continue to work with speed to address housing challenges in the province. We have delivered houses to happy beneficiaries in three local municipalities in these two districts. We continue to urge all contractors across the province to deliver quality housing at a rapid pace so as to allow beneficiaries to receive their houses as per completion. This is also part of our strategy to curb vandalism and to ensure that beneficiaries take ownership of these beautiful houses immediately.

Furthermore, the MEC said, ‘’As enjoined by Section 26 of the Constitution, we want to ensure that everyone has access to adequate housing, within our available resources, and we will be delivering more houses in other Districts, in this month and beyond.

The Northern Cape Provincial Government is committed to eradicating the housing backlog in the province through the building and handing over of houses in all the districts.
